Sri Lanka Travel Guide
Thanks to two different monsoon systems, Sri Lanka is a year‑round destination. The “best time” simply depends on which coast—and which experiences—you want.
For Galle, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, and the south‑west beaches, the best weather arrives from December through April. Expect sunny days, calm seas, and great conditions for whale watching and safaris in the south. This is also peak season, so book early for Christmas and New Year.
When the south‑west is rainy, the east coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) is at its best. From May to September you'll find long, sunny days, great surf, and fewer crowds—perfect if you prefer a quieter, better‑value escape.
The central highlands and Cultural Triangle are visitable most of the year. February to September offers the clearest skies for tea‑country train rides, hikes around Ella, and exploring ancient sites like Sigiriya and Dambulla.
April and October–November bring short, tropical showers but also smaller crowds and better prices. April is special for Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when the whole island celebrates with food, games, and family gatherings.
